Strengthening Governance in Southeast Asia's Startup Ecosystem
Southeast Asia's technology ecosystem is entering a new chapter, moving beyond rapid expansion to confront the realities of scale, governance, and sustainability. Over the past year, headline cases across the region have underscored the critical need for operational discipline and accountability.
Regulators and industry groups are responding with decisive action. Indonesia's OJK has rolled out a 2024–2028 Venture Capital Roadmap with stricter licensing, compliance, and investor-protection frameworks, while the Singapore Venture & Private Capital Association (SVCA) and its ASEAN counterparts have introduced a Venture Capital Maturation Map to harmonize due diligence, board governance, and reporting practices.
At Altara Ventures, governance has always been integral to how we invest. We've doubled down with new measures — consolidated reporting for cross-border subsidiaries, tighter receivables tracking, and independent audits across the portfolio. Our prediction: As today's tighter capital environment forces funds into introspection and portfolio discipline, we should expect more cracks to surface publicly in 2026 — yet this cleansing cycle ultimately strengthens the ecosystem for the long run.
