In the last quarter, Altara Ventures closed another new investment, bringing our portfolio to sixteen companies. We also supported several existing assets through follow-on financings, which we look forward to sharing after their official announcements. Finally, we welcomed our LPs, partners and portfolio cofounders to our Altara Get Together Event in Singapore, where we discussed the state of global geopolitics and its impact on Southeast Asia investment opportunities.
ALTARA GET TOGETHER 2024
"Geopolitics meets Investments in Southeast Asia" - In March, we were honoured to host almost 100 of our close partners and LPs at our Altara Get Together, held at the Tanglin Club Singapore. At the event, Professor Kishore Mahbubani, former Singapore Ambassador to the United Nations, shared his views on the geopolitics defining our generation in a keynote titled "Is the World Falling Apart or Coming Together?"
Some key takeaways:
1. A Lesson from History: When the world's #1 superpower is challenged by the world's #1 emerging power, war ensues in the competition for primacy.
2. Universal Goals: In this time of competition, we need cooperation more than ever to rally around solutions to shared, existential threats like climate change. These efforts will be much harder to progress during an era of geopolitical rivalry.
3. The Southeast Asian Model: Our region holds the unique status of being multicultural, multiethnic, economically diverse and generally harmonious. This can be attributed to the design principles of ASEAN, allowing flexibility to its members rather than enforcing membership based on hard lines of compliance.
Professor Mahbubani also shared his thoughts on the role of venture investment during these tumultuous times, which in Altara's view, presents a unique window to seek out some of the greatest investment opportunities.
